DARWIN TO MOUNT ISA TOUR | 8 Days / 7 Nights
Tour Begins - Darwin, NT
Departure - Mount Isa, QLD
Day 1 : Pick up from your accommodation in Darwin and spend the day exploring the many nature reserves around Darwin. Species we will be targeting are Rainbow Pitta, Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove, Bush-stone Curlew, Mangrove Robin, Green-backed Gerygone, Brown Whistler, Northern Fantail, Red-winged Parrot, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Blue-winged Kookaburra, Forest Kingfisher, Azure Kingfisher and Little Corella. We will also spend time in the Mangroves trying to photograph Red-headed Myzomela, Mangrove-Grey Fantail, Mangrove Gerygone, Mangrove Golden Whistler and Torresian Kingfisher.
The afternoon we will be out searching for roosting nocturnal birds like Tawny Frogmouth, Barking Owl and our main target the Rufous Owl.

Day 2 : We head out early to one of Darwin’s best and famous birding spots, Fogg Dam. Here we will bird mostly from the car, targets include Black-necked Stork, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Pied Heron, Comb-crested Jacana, Arafura Fantail, Paperbark Flycatcher, Royal Spoonbill, Crimson Finch and Forest Kingfisher. After our time at Fogg Dam we then take a short cut through Marrakai Tracks on our way down to Katherine and our accommodation for the night. The afternoon around Katherine will be spent targeting the endemic Hooded Parrot, Chestnut-backed Button-quail, Varied Sittella and Finches like Gouldian, Long-tailed and Masked.

Day 3 : An early start to head South to look for one of the Northern Territories most wanted birds the Northern Shrike-tit, this location is also a great area for Finches, Woodswallows, Button-quail and Black-tailed Treecreepers. After a morning of birding at this site we start the big drive South toward Tennant Creek and our accommodation for the night. If we get to Tennant Creek in time we will spend the afternoon around the beautiful and mostly unexplored Honeymoon Range, here our main target is the rarely seen and photographed Tennant Creek race of Dusky Grasswren. In the same area we will also be looking for Painted Finch, White-winged Fairy-wren, Spinfexbird, Australian Ringneck and Spinifex Pigeons.

Day 4 : On this morning we will head back to the Honeymoon Range, we will be looking for better views or to find anything we missed the previous day. We will also be checking out the Tennant Creek Sewage ponds which can be very productive and sometimes turn up a rarity or two. After lunch in Tennant Creek we will start heading East and onto the Barkly Tablelands. The afternoon will be spent around the roadhouse looking for things like Peregrine Falcon, Singing Honeyeater, Zebra Finch, Crested Bellbird, Chiming Wedgebill, White-browed and Masked Woodswallows and Red-browed Pardalote.

Day 5 : A very early start, we will be driving North back onto the plains. Here we will be looking for Flock Bronzewings, Australian Pratincole, Ground Cuckoo-shrike and possibly a Black or Grey Falcon. After a morning on the plains we will start heading East to Mount Isa and our accommodation for the next couple of nights.
We will be actively birding along the drive and depending on what time we get into Mount Isa will depend on if there is any birding done this day.

Day 6 : Our first morning will begin an hour North of Mount Isa to look for one of our main targets, Carpentarian Grasswren, other birds in the area are Spinifex Pigeons, Black-tailed Treecreepers, Grey-headed & Grey-fronted Honeyeaters.
The afternoon will be spent looking for another Mount Isa speciality the Kalkadoon Grasswren, they are found on the Rocky Mountains around Mount Isa.

Day 7 : Today we will be spending time exploring some of Mount Isa’s great birding areas, our main targets will be Spotted Bowerbird, Pictorella Munia, Budgerigar, Cockatiel, Cloncurry Ringneck, Varied Lorikeet, Painted Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Australian Pratincole and possibly a Yellow Chat.

Day 8 : What we do on the final morning of the tour will depend on which Grasswren we need better views of or photograph, we can go in search of the Carpentarian Grasswren again or look around the hills for Kalkadoon Grasswren.
